Fundamentally, the reality we live in is a collection of numbers and values. Certain patterns can be seen all around us that repeat and coincide with certain developments. This is the revered “Fibonacci sequence†named after the Italian mathematician Leonardo Pisano Bigollo. The pattern these numbers follow is that each number is the sum of the two numbers before it. For example, we start with 0 and 1. 0 + 1 is 1, so 1 becomes the next number. Then adding the last two numbers, 1 + 1 is 2, so 2 becomes the next number in the sequence. Following this pattern will give an infinite number of terms.
Now, why is any of this important? This is simply an illustration of how numbers and patterns can carry huge effects and implications on the world around us.
If we take the numbers in this sequence and make squares with their width, put the squares next to one another, and connected the corners with a line, we would see a shape similar to a spiral begin to emerge. This specific spiral can be used to create what is known as the golden ratio, where two quantities’ ratio is the same as the ratio of their sum to the larger of the two quantities. This ratio is seen all over nature, including in flower petals, tree branches, shells, hurricanes, faces, human organs, DNA, and even galaxies themselves.
