Planets help shape our destinies and under vedic astrology the ruling planets are identified as:
Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (shadow planet), Ketu (shadow planet).

Neptune, Uranus and Pluto are not accounted for because vedic astrology takes a geocentric view (orbit of earth) not a heliocentric view (orbit of sun) and the planets that indicate light have an affect on our destinies but the planets Neptune, Uranus and Pluto do not indicate light and so they have no influence. Rahu and Ketu are shadow planets but more specifically nodes of the moon. They indicate light and therefore influence your horoscope.

Under Lal Kitab the identified ruling planets are also given different forms, genders, relationships and significance hierarchies. Planets can be pious or sinful, equals or enemies. Sun, Jupiter, and Mars are male planets while Venus and Moon are female. Saturn and Mercury are regarded as neutral planets (though sometimes Saturn also known as Shani is male) and Rahu and Ketu’s allegiance lies with Saturn.

Planets also have superior or inferior positions and some are Karakas (one who causes) of other planets. Lal Kitab identifies the superior and inferior positions of houses instead of zodiacs. This is because the twelve zodiac are named in twelve divisions of the finger. All the planets or zodiacs are drowned in houses of sea which means all that remains are floating numbers to take place of houses.
